Perth 7s: Shujaa’s poor show with a loss to New Zealand and Fiji

Kenya’s Shujaa, the national rugby 7s team started their Perth 7s campaign on a bad note losing the two opening matches against Fiji and New Zealand at the HBF Park in Australia.

In the first match against New Zealand, Kenya lost 29-14 in a physically brutal match as they searched for the second time quarterfinals on Australian soil.

Shujaa went down first through Thang Thang Vanuk who touched down for a try with a successful conversion for a 7-0 lead for All Blacks.

Captain George Ooro scored Shujaa’s first try with Nygel Amaitsa’s successful conversion leveled the scores at 7-7 to excite Kenyan fans before New Zealand’s Regan converted his try for a 14-7 at halftime.

After water break, New Zealand were reduced to 6 and Shujaa took an advantage with Amaitsa passing to Patrick Odongo for Kenya’s second converted try to level the score at 14.

But New Zealand’s Andrew Knewstubb unconverted try made it 19-14 before Codemuru Vai made another try for 24-14 and McGarvey Ngarohi’s try sealed a 29-14 win.

Kenya started well in the second match against Fiji with a 14-0 lead but resilient Fiji overturned the lead to win 14-21.

Amaitsa made the first try, which he converted for 7-0 lead before Amaitsa successfully converted Samuel Asati’s try for a 14-0 lead.

But Villaime Satala converted Villaime Satala try halved the score at 14-07 into break.

From break, Joseva Talacolo converted his try to level the score at 14-14 and Nasova scored his second try of the match with a successful conversion for 21-14 win.

Kenya will now face unbeaten Uruguay tomorrow Saturday January 25th at 7:00am EAT.

Uruguay beat Fiji  24-17 in the openin match and edged out New Zealand 17-14 in the second encounter.
