Philip Mugisha wins Kisumu Scrabble tourney

Ugandan Phillip Edwin Mugisha lived up his expectations as he extended his day one lead to win the Scrabble Kenya Kisumu Tournament today.

Mugisha overtook Kenya’s finest Gitonga Nderitu to emerge victorious in the 6th leg of World English Scrabble Players Association Championships (WESPAC) qualifier held in Kisumu over the weekend

He edged Gitonga 439-383  in the penultimate round to claim the title by a point

Gitonga Nderitu managed to outspread teammate Manase Otieno (1034 to 494) for 2nd after both tied on 12 wins

Kenyatta University captain Andrew Wabwire acquitted himself well on his debut in the premier division to place 5th

University of Eldoret’s Tarus Kipruto finally earned his promotion to premier division pipping Nakuru county rep John Wachira

Chief guest Peter Dawo challenged team Kenya to the fourteenth Africa Scrabble Championship to bring the gold medal home (and improve on the silver won in the last edition).

The tournament was a precursor for Africa Scrabble championships set for 28th November to 2nd December in Kirinyaga county.
