Head coach Benni McCarthy axed five top players led by Yakeen Muteheli and Staphod Odhiambo of Ulinzi Stars, Keith Imbali of Shabana, Kelly Madada of AFC Leopards, and Tusker FC’s goalkeeper Brian Opondo.

Representing one’s nation is the highest honour that can be bestowed on an athlete, in my opinion. We’ve had to let go of some players—not because they lack quality, but because the tournament requires a specific squad size. For this reason, we must retain only the best.”

The coach also mentioned that the team is working hard and hinted at a ‘surprise’ for Kenyan fans

President William Ruto also attended one of the team’s training sessions to meet with the players. Although the meeting was held behind closed doors, he assured the team of his full support as they prepare for the tournament.
