Team Kenya swimmer Jeremy Rieck delivered an impressive performance on day one of the swimming competition at the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games, finishing sixth in the Men’s 100m Butterfly final with a personal best time of 55.15 seconds.
Rieck secured his place in the final after finishing third in Heat Three of four before producing an improved performance in the medal race to register his new personal best.
Team Kenya Team Manager Thaddeus Wamunyu described the performance as an encouraging start, noting that qualifying for a final at the global youth competition was no mean feat. He said Rieck’s achievement would serve as motivation for the rest of the Kenyan contingent to work harder and push for better performances as the competition progresses.
Rieck, meanwhile, said he was gradually adapting to the water temperatures and conditions in Dakar. The swimmer expressed confidence in his progress and hopes to secure another final appearance when he returns to the pool.
He is scheduled to compete in the Men’s 100m Backstroke on Tuesday, November 3.
Meanwhile, Kenya’s swimming team will have more representation in the pool on Monday, November 2, with Neo Olengo set to compete in the Men’s 200m Breaststroke and Macrine Kalombo in the Women’s 100m Freestyle.
In another encouraging result for Team Kenya, the Baseball5 team defeated Syria 2-0 to complete its group-stage campaign with three wins and three losses.
The victory marked a positive conclusion to Kenya’s group-stage matches, with the team now turning its attention to the knockout rounds. The quarter-finals and semi-finals are scheduled for Monday, November 2, as Kenya looks to extend its campaign and challenge for a place in the medal matches.
With swimming and Baseball5 delivering encouraging moments on the opening day, Team Kenya will be hoping to build on the momentum as its young athletes continue their quest for success at Dakar 2026, the first Youth Olympic Games to be hosted on African soil
