Robert Matano crowned with Fidelity Insurance/SJAK gong

Tusker fc head coach Robert Matano was crowned the September/October Fidelity Insurance in conjunction with Sports Journalists Association of Kenya (SJAK) coach of the Month.

The experienced coach relegated Kariobangi Shark’s William Muluya to second after finishing the 2018 Kenya Premier league (KPL) season in third position behind champions Gor Mahia and second placed Bandari.

Matano picked Tusker in relegation zone finished to 3rd on the log at the season’s conclusion after winning four of its five matches in the two months and registered a draw in the other game. They began the month with a 2-0 win over Thika United at Thika Sub County Stadium before settling for a 2-2 draw against Mathare United at Ruaraka.

The Brewers then demolished AFC Leopards 4-0 in Machakos. Tusker then ended the month with an away 1-0 win over Nzoia at Sudi Stadium. The final match of the season saw the Robert Matano coached outfit beat champions Gor Mahia by a solitary goal at Thika Sub County Stadium.

“I did not know that I would get this award but it makes me very happy. It may have delayed but it sure is a timely booster as we go into the new season. I’m grateful to my players who worked hard for me to get this gong and i want to urge them to work harder and pick the players’ award as the season begins,” Matano said after picking his plaque at the club’s training grounds in ruaraka

Matano who joined Tusker from AFC Leopards in April 2018 becomes the eighth recipient of the accolade this year after Francis Kimanzi, Dennis Kitambi, Sammy Okoth, Anthony Mwangi, Dylan Kerr, Patrick Odhiambo and Bernard Mwalala.
