Royal Nairobi Golf club won the Tannahill Shield tournament after five years on long wait for the title during the weekend’s 99th edition of the annual tournament.
On Sunday, Royal team, taking home advantage defeated Western select side with a point to lift the title after five years since 2019.
The team made up of Njogu Kungu, Korby Gatiramu, Jetinder Thethy, AbnerOnsomu garnered a total of 39 points in the three day tournament that teed off on Friday to Sunday evening with the tournament attracting eight clubs from across the country.
The champions managed to beat improved Western team by a point to 38 as multiple champions Miuthaiga settled for third on 36 points. Then defending champions Sigona club finished 4th on 33 points ahead of Kenya Railways’ 32, Vet Lab 29, Mombasa 28, Limuru 27 and Karen’s 26.
Royal collected 14 points in round one followed by 7 points in round 2, 11 in round three with 7 in the 4th and final round on Sunday for the title while their closest challenger Western garnered 10 in round one, 16 in round two, with identical 6 points in the 3rd and 4th rounds respectively.
On Sunday, the champions played to a half with Western then lost to Kenya Railways 5-3.
Muthaiga, who last won the title in the 2022 season moved to position three.
Amidst the impressive lineup of teams, Mombasa Golf Club emerged as a standout contender, displaying promising talent and determination throughout the tournament. Supported by NCBA as their sponsors, the Mombasa team showcased a commendable performance, securing 28 points and finishing seventh overall.
