Soget aiming higher at Kisumu Athletics Kenya meet

Former world under 20 1,500m bronze medalist Justus Soget will be among the star attractions at this weekend’s second leg of Athletics Kenya weekend meet in Kisumu.

The former 3,000m IAAF Muller World Indoor Grand Prix champion, who has been sharpening his skills at the Kipchoge Keino stadium in Eldoret and his Torongo Training camp in Baringo county said that he will be running the 5,000m as part of his transition into the category after dominating the 1,500m races for long.

The Japan based runner, who competes for Honda Motor vehicle in the Japanese races said competing in the 5,000m locally will give him an upper hand as he heads for major races across the world.

“In Kisumu I will be running the 5,000m race as part of endurance in many races to come. I have had good runs in the 1,500m and running 5,000m in Kisumu will give an advantage ahead of many races,” said 2018 Mumias 1,500m Athletics Kenya weekend meet champion.

The Kirobon high school alumnus said he will also be seeking the ticket for world championships in Oregon, the United States of America as well as the Commonwealth Games that will be held in Birmingham, England.

“My target is to run many weekend meets as part of preparations for the two important events like the World championships and Commonwealth Games. Now that I am off duty, serving my leave, I will be using such great time to train for the big events that the world will be chasing for medals,” said Soget.

With many World Indoor championships going on, he said he will be considering competing in one of them.

“After Kisumu meet, I will be set to compete in some of these World Indoor Championships but am not sure which ones I will be competing in now that we are in contact with race organizers to select them for me,” he added.

Soget won bronze in the 1,500m at the 2018 world under 20 championships in Tampere, Finland when he timed 3:42.14, where George Manangoi was the champion, winning gold 3:41.71, followed by Norway Jakob Ingebrigtsen for silver in 3:41.89.
