St Joseph’s Kitale girls dominate handball and hockey at Iten Open

Reigning East Africa secondary Schools Sports Association handball girls champions St Joseph’s Kitale were crowned the champions of the annual Iten Open tournament played in Iten.

Kitale based school head coach Maureen Sitati said that their journey to defend the East Africa title has begun in earnest.

The handball queens humbled Nasokol girls during the final 23-13 ahead of Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association that kicks off in two weeks’ time at the zonal level.

“The win is good now that we are preparing for the school games starting in two weeks’ time. We came here with a purpose and the purpose has been achieved. We wanted to win this tournament and that has been well achieved. Our purpose this year is to retain the East Africa title,” said Sitati.

Sitati said that the tournament was more of a waste because they did not find a worthy competitor during the two-day championships after Nasokol failed to set up a revenge match when they lost in pool matches.

“The win came very easily. We wanted to have worthy opponents here but that was not the case. Apart from Nasokol, the school we beat in pool matches 13-09, others were just a wash for us. They did not offer any challenge and we feel like we wasted ourselves,” said Sitati.

The school also won the hockey girls title played at the Iten grounds on Sunday evening.

The Trans Nzoia based school won all their round robin matches in a tournament that attracted four teams.

Without conceding any goal, they defeated Kapkenda girls 5-0, followed by a 2-0 victory over Sing’ore Girls and completed the tournament with 1-0 win over Moi Girls, Nangili.

Head coach John Lusaka said they have so far established their mistakes and they have rectified before the school games kicks off.

“In this tournament, we had quality time to play not like other tournaments where we have to play like 20 minutes because of many teams. The quality time means that we could assess the players ability maximumly,” he said.

In boys’ Frisk Hockey club defeated Kapsabet Boys by a solitary goal. The winners were 1-0 winners over Tambach in semies while Kapsabet were 1-0 winners against Kabartonjo Boys.
