SuperSport terminates KPL contract

The Kenyan Premier League on Thursday received a major blow following the cancellation of a long standing agreement with  Live Broadcast partner SuperSport.

In a brief statement on Thursday to newsrooms , SuperSport announced that ” SuperSport has cancelled its contract with the Kenyan Football League (KPL) following KPL’s breach of the Licence Agreement entered into by the parties. The situation became untenable and it put SuperSport at risk therefore SuperSport has no option but to terminate the contract.”

The statement adds that “SuperSport will continue in its commitment to providing the best sports content in Africa via platforms with cutting-edge technology and on multiple devices. Formal notice of cancellation of the contract has been given and all the necessary procedures and steps are being put in place to manage the exit from this league. ”

Since arriving in Kenya close to a decade ago, SuperSport has trained and employed hundreds of young Kenyan television producers and  technical crew members who have been behind the Live screening of local matches in the region.

The  turn of events is expected to also see massive loss of jobs and revenue for  young talents in addition to lost airtime for sponsors who rushed in to capitalize on the Live Broadcast.

Further to this, KPL clubs will be among the worst hit as all clubs in the league received close to 5 Million shillings annually  as part of the Broadcast rights trickle down revenue.

The money was directly wired to club accounts with most clubs using this to pay their players’ salaries and cater for travel logistics.
