UCI President David Lappartient to grace CAC Championships

The President of Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) David Lappartient is expected in the country to witness the ongoing CAC Africa Road Cycling Championships in the North Rift counties of Nandi, Uasin Gishu and Elgeyo marakwet.

The man, who has offered his name to serve as the International Olympics Committee (IOC) president is expected in the country on Saturday, the penultimate round of the cycling championships.

Speaking in Eldoret today, the Golazo Director International Christopher Impens said that the president will be in the country to witness the final events of the five day championships that comes to a conclusion on Sunday in Iten.

“The UCI president will be in the country to witness these great championships over the weekend. We are expecting him to start on Saturday all the way to Sunday,” said Impens, who was an Olympic games runner in the 1,500m.

Back at the championships, day one was good for Eritrean and Ugandans who dominated the champions.

In Elite men 33.8km, Uganda Charles Kagimu won the race to celebrate his country’s independence day while Paul Lomuria led a 1-2 podium finish in men’s under 23 category with Lawrence Lorot coming second.

Eritrean national anthem also dominated day one of the Championships with Keven Teklemariam and Betiel Efrem winning in junior men and women who covered 22.5km and 11.2km respectively.

Another Eritrean Suzana Fiseha was victorious in 32:27.402 beating compatriot Adiam Dawit Mengs (33:04.366) to second as Ethiopian Mieraf Gebregzabiher Aregawi.

In Elite women, South Africans dominated the event with Lucy Young emerging victorious ahead of compatriot Ashleigh coming with Namibian Melisa Hinz completing the podium after clearing 22.5km distance.
