Ugandan pair of Charles Kagimu and Paul Lomuria celebrated their Independence Day on a high following their victory at the Confederation of Africa Cycling (CAC) Africa Road Cycling Championships in Eldoret, Uasin Gisu County.
The Ugandans celebrated with 62th birthday on a high note with their national flag being raised back to back in both the elite men and the under 23 men at the time trial event, the last shows of day one of the championships in Eldoret.
Born in 1998, Kagimu won the elite men title after subbing off 33.8km in the last race of the day, saying that he did not just win for his country but the East Africa Community as a whole.
“Today is our Independent Day and coming here with a win is a plus to me and raising the national flag. I have been living in Kenya since I was 17 and now I am mature and professional in what I do as a cyclist,” said Kagimu who crossed the finish line in 41:11.150.
Silver medal went to South African Brandon Downes who stopped the timer at 41:19.311 with bronze going to Moroccan Adil El Arbaoui at 42:50.978.
Lomuria led his Ugandan counterpart Lawrence Lorot in a 1-2 podium finish in men’s under 23 category in time trial event.
The 22 year old checked in at 42:40.532 with Lorot coming second with 42:41.260 as South African Joshua Dike completed the podium in 43:00.525.
Peterson kamau Wairimu was the top Kenyan after finishing in 9th position with compatriot Boaz Kipkosgei Kangogo in 10th.
