Reigning Tokyo Marathon champion Rosemary Wanjiru, Selly Chepyego and Shyline Jepkorir failed to win a medal in a marathon during the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary.
Wanjiru was the best Kenyan after finishing 4th in 2:26:42 as Selly Chepyego followed in the seventh position in 2:27:09.
Ethiopian retain the marathon title when Amane Shankule won the title in 2:245.23 followed by compatriot Gotytom Gebreslase clocked 2:24:34 for silver while Moroccan Fatima Gardadi (2:25:17) won bronze in and Kenyan born Israel Lorna Saltpetre was fourth after clocking 2:25:38.
After the race, Wanjiru said: “I was forced to slow down at the 36km mark because the hot conditions were too much to take. I had to take it very easy at this point and I am happy I ended up sixth,” she noted.
