Wanyonyi, kemboi dominate in walks as Kadogo and Ochieng rule in sprints

World under 20 10,000m walk gold medalist Heristone Wanyonyi and Sylvia Kemboi were the winners of 10,000m race walk championships during the 4th leg of Athletics Kenya track and field champuionships held at the Mumias Sports Complex in Kakamega County.

Fresh from competing at the World Race Walk team challenge in Muscat, Oman, finishing 4th with the national record, Wanyonyi, for the first time defeated Africa under 20 10,000m race walk champion Samson Dominic Ndigiti for the title in the first race of the day.

Wanyonyi won the title in 44:27.76 with Ndigiti coming second timing 44:30.98 and Stephen Ndanguli (45:06.66).

“This is the first time am winning against Ndigiti and am happy for the results,” said Wanyonyi.

The duo have been rivals since high school, with Ndiggiti dominating against Wanyonyi.

In women, Kemboi, who has dominated in the track events this year won the title in 48:56 ahead of Naomi Chepkorir (49:58) with Askuta Ekate completing the podium in 51:52.

Geoffrey Kirwa from National police Service won the 3,0000m steeplechase champion in 8:45.24 followed by Turkey international Hilal Yego coming second in 8:45.55 and Peter Rono in third timing 8:52.74.

Robert Kiprop defeated Edward zakayo to win the men’s 5,000m in 13:36.09 with Zakayo coming second timing 13:36.35 and Meshack Langat completing the podium in 13:36.53.

Eunice Kadogo and hesbon Ochieng were 200m winners in women and men respectively. Kadogo won the women’s title in 24.6 followed by Mercy Chebet (24.8) and Joan Cherono (23.3).

Ochieng won the title in 21.5 followed by Lewis Oichoe (21.6) and Samuel Chege in 21.9.

Brian Kiptum dominated 800m winning in 1:46.96 followed by Jonah Kiprop (1:47.33) and Macdonald Kiprop (1:47.78).

In 400m men, William Ryan topped the charts in 47.7 followed by Stanley Kieti (47.8) and Kevin Kiprotich in 48.0.
