William Mbevi floored in Mumias AK meeting

William Mbevi, a member of 400m hurdle Commonwealth Games was floored by during the 5th Athletics Kenya Track and Field event at Mumias Sports Complex, kakamega County.

Mbevi, the Kenya Defence Forces man, finished fourth despite winning in the first slow heat with a big margin.

“The race was not easy but I used today’s event as part of my training for national champions ahead of Africa championships,” said Mbevi.

But Vincent Kosgei won the in the fastest heat two to take the title in 54:2 as he targets to compete at the Africa Athletics Championships in Assaba, Nigeria in August.

Geoffrey Mutai came second timing 52:4 ahead of Gideon Muchoke (54.9) as Mbevi,whoalso wants to feature in the Assaba bound team timed 54.9.

In women’s category, Jane Chege won in 63:6 ahead of Gladys Ngure (64:8), Naomi Chelangat (66:4) before Winny Boinet came fourth timing 66:7.

Local cross country runner Roselida Chepketer dominated the 10,000m race, beating bigwigs in the first race.

Form two student at Chemelel High school faced tough challenge from experienced Beatrice Begi , Gladys Koech and Leonida Mosop to win the race in 35:35.5.

Top four athletes enjoyed the lead from the start to the 19th lap before Chepketer stepped forward, enjoyed the lead for one lap before Begi took command.

Begi’s lead did not last as Chepketer, who missed an opportunity for East Africa Secondary schools games in Rwanda set for August took charge on 20th lap finish line.

The 5,000m specialist decided to compete in 10,000m as part of endurance.

“I had to compete in 10,000m to gauge my endurance in long distance race. This will guide me if I cut into the African athletics team,” said Chepketer.
