Willy Mwangi edge bigwigs to win Mombasa Scrabble title

Willy Mwangi stunned top seed Scrabble players to emerged victorious in the Mombasa scrabble Kenya championships held at Kenya Ports Authority.

Nakuru’s Mwangi beat day one leader Allan Oyende after he timed his charge up the table perfectly,  reeling off 6 consecutive wins including a 529-387 blow out in the penultimate game against Kenya One Gitonga Nderitu who had to settle for second.

Second seed Oyende, who relinquished the lead closed the podium on inferior spread after tying with Gitonga on 12 wins. Nicholas Mbugua (12 +153) and Michael Gongolo (11 +946) finished 4th and 5th respectively.

Playing at home, Michael Onyango won the intermediate division when he pipped veteran Samson Midigo to the title by a point with Joseph Karinga third.

It was double celebration for KPA scrabble club as Jared Kayo won the amateur division ahead of University of Eldoret captain Hannah Wambuku.

The tournament was also used to select Kenya team to the World English-language Scrabble players association Championship (WESPAC)  was unveiled at the conclusion of the Grand Prix selection.
Nderitu will anchor the Word Warriors challenge with Oyende while Bernard Koyyoko makes a debut with veteran campaigners Onani Magwanga & Patrick Litunya
Chairman Benard Amuke who agonisingly missed qualification by 2 points congratulated the team and urged them to prepare well to bring the title and an extra slot for Kenya in the next edition
