Fresh from setting a new course record at Frankfurt marathon on Sunday, Valary Aiyabei Jemeli has set her focus in setting a new world marathon record as well as competing at the world marathon majors in future.
Aiyabei from Iten, Elgeyo Marakwet county was the 5th fastest women marathon this year when she clocked 2:19.10, breaking then record held by Ethiopia’s Meskerem Assefa that stood at 2:20.36 set in 2018.
The 2019 Eldoret City marathon champion jetted back on Tuesday afternoon accompanied by her husband Kenneth Kiplagat and their daughter Michelle Jebet.
With Brigid Kosgei setting a new world record early this month during Chicago marathon, Aiyabei said it is possible to bring down that record, which she is working on with her coaches.
“My plan is to break the world record at a world majors race. That is my next season’s plan, to run in a major marathon, which we will plan with my coach and management,” said Aiyabei.
The reigning 2018 Beijing marathon champion also won Barcelona marathon title was is optimistic to make a debut in bigger races like New York, Berlin, Tokyo, Chicago, Boston and London marathons that counts for a world marathon majors jackpot.
“It is possible to break the world record, which depends with your mind and how you train for it, it is my prayer in the near future I will go for it,” added Aiyabei.
The former Kass marathon champion said Kosgei breaking the world marathon record, is a motivation to her to move to another step in running career.
“It was a good motivation if you see another person moving to another step it is a must for you too to move to another step,” she said.
Her husband Kiplagat said they are going to get some time off for recovery as they wait for the next season and most likely to get a chance to compete in a major marathon.
“We are going to rest a bit and recovery while doing some easy running as we wait for management decision for next season as from next year,” said Kiplagat
