Beatrice Chebet win Kenyas third gold at Africa championships in Mauritius

World cross country junior champion Beatrice Chebet won third gold for Kenya at the ongoing Africa Senior Athletics championships in Reduit, Mauritius today.

After Winny Chebet winning the 1,500m gold as Ferdinand Omanyala’s 100m gold, Chebet, the former world under 20 5,000m champion led Caroline Nyaga to 1 and 3 positions, adding another gold in 5,000m to county to three gold medals, one silver and two bronze.

Silver winner was Purity Chepkirui who finished second behind Chebet while Reuben Longosiwa won bronze in 10,000m yesterday.

She won the title in 15”00.82 ahead of Ethiopian Fentaye Azale who was second in 15:01.89 with Kenyan Caroline Nyaga completing the podium 15:05.34.

Ethiopia’s Melknat Sharew and Sarah Chelangat from Uganda who has a bad season with injuries that has kept her out of action came home in fourth and fifth in 15:08.65 and 15:37.68 respectively.

Double Olympic champion Caster Semenya finished a distant sixth in 16:03.24.
