Heristone Wanyonyi secured the first race walk 10,000m gold for Kenya, breaking the losing tradition on the discipline at the ongoing world under 20 athletics championships in Kasarani.
The Ortum boys alumnus won the 4th gold for Kenya in 42:10.84 ahead of indian Amit in 42:17.94 and French Dimitri Durand completing the podium in 42:47.58.
The former 10,000m runner, who was forced to change to walk by his Psigirio Primary school teacher Wesley Korir following his poor performance said that he was inspired by Africa 20km walk champion Samuel Gathimba, who has dominated the country’s walk.
