Eldoret volleyball attracts 170 teams

Eldoret volleyball tournament has broken the record with 170 teams confirming to compete when the tournament serves off on Thursday to Sunday at the Eldoret National Polytechnic Grounds.

Dubbed Kipchumba Karori International Tournament, it has broken the record as one of the tournaments in the country with the highest number of teams.

Kenya Volleyball Federation president Charles Nyaberi said the tournament has the highest purse on prize money.

“Eldoret is attractive venue for volleyball because we have a lot of talents. Besides track and field, we also have a good number of volleyball players and each time, we have such tournaments, many talents are nurtured,” said Nyaberi.

The tournament patron Paul Bitok said the history with 170 teams, breaking the earlier record of 88 teams.

“At the moment, we have broken the record of teams competing in Eldoret tournaments. We had a record of 88 teams but now we are at 170 with 7 coming from Uganda and a team from Rwanda.  Apart from the tournament, we shall also be matching culture and sports,” said Bitok.

He said that winners in the elite category will pocket Kshs 500,000, second place to walk home with 300,000 and third position on 200,000.

Uasin Gishu county volleyball chairman David Letting said that due to the surging number of teams, they will use various fields to ensure that they get total results.

“We are ready for the tournament and we have many venues and this is one of the biggest tournaments. The tournament will assist the young people to nurture talents. It is also an opportunity to showcase their talents to earn employment to various disciplines,” said Letting.
