Elgeyo Marakwet golfers: ever green Emmanuel Talel sinks a birdie to lift title

He started playing golf less than a year ago but his superlative consistency performance is paying dearly winning two tournaments within a month.

Emmanuel Talel shot 43 stable points to claim the title after beating his main challenger Patrick Kiprop on count back in the tournament that was sponsored by golfers who comes from Elgeyo Marakwet County played at Eldoret club.

The young golfer carded 22 points in the opening nine, starting with double pars on hole one par five and hole two par three. On par four hole three, he sunk double followed by a par two bogeys a par, bogey and a par.

He started badly on the outward nine with double bogey, a bogey, sunk back three double bogeys, recovered with a par on hole 15, another double bogey but luck came his way in hole 17 with a birdie to earn him 21 points.

Handicap 24 player said he was not ready to play until his boss, the Elgeyo Marakwet governor Alex Tolgos called him to take pictures.

“I had no plans to play today since I was in church but I received a call to take photo and realizing my boss was playing, I also took to the greens and later became the champion,” said Talel who got his handicap on 11th November 2017.

Faith Mburu was the third finisher with 40 points to complete the prize list. Sunjay Dodia and Benjamin Chemwalo were the winners of first and second nines with 19 and 21 points respectively.

Before the Saturday’s event, there has been a Matchplay that started three months ago as Aaron Kitur was the gold winner beating Hillary Kipkoskei and Nathan Tororei finishing third.

In the silver section, Nelson Orgut won followed by Jackson Kiprono and Hellen Yego while bronze winner was Mike Rotich ahead of Stanley Kirui.
