Top athletes are set to compete at this year’s Lukenya University Ten Million Trees Half marathon set for March 29th at the Lukenya University in Mtito Andei in Makueni County.
With the event heading into the third edition, the organozers have scaled down to 21km and 10km only unlike in the past when there used to have a marathon.
The race has lucrative categories like the 21km and 10km contests that will see the winners head home with Kshs 250,000 for both men and women for top positions. Second finisher will walk away with kshs 100,000 and Kshs 75,000 respectively.
According to organizers led by Philip Muia, the 21km distance will feature elites but the 10km category specifically for the locals to ensure that all and sundry have a level playing ground in the competition.
“We want to inspire future athletes from the region and we want locals to compete in the 10km where we also have good prizes,” said Muia.
Themed, ‘Running For A Greener Future’, each participant is expected to plant a tree to make the locals enjoy the running environment.
“We want to plant ten million trees in ten years and we are urging the locals to seize the opportunity and try their luck in this race,” said Muia.
Winners in the 10km will pocket kshs 30,000, followed by kshs 20,000 and kshs 10,000 for top three positions respectively down to top ten finishers.
