Caroline Makandi Gitonga and Miriam Cherop won the first medals for Kenya in day one of the World Athletics Road Running Championships in Copenhagen, Denmark.
Gitonga won silver in the 5km race behind Likina Amebaw, who recently won the Ultimate 5000m crown.
The Ethiopian Amebaw won in 14:41 with Gitonga coming second at for silver in 14:48, while Australia’s Rose Davies finished strongly to clinch bronze in an Oceanian record of 14:50.
Cherop won bronze in women’s One Mile race behind the champion and gold medalist Agathe Guillemot in a world-leading European record of 4:22.74.
At 27, the French international won the title in Copenhagen after winning silver at the inaugural World Road Running Championships in Riga.
Ethiopia’s Freweyni Hailu again finished second at 4:24.35 with Kenya’s Cherop settling for bronze in 4:25.71 as her season’s best.
Kenya’s Naomi Korir recorded her personal best of 4:29.15, just ahead of Jamaica’s Adelle Tracey.
No Kenyan medals
Robert Farken won the men’s one Mile title in a world-leading German record of 3:51.80 with the German produced his decisive move to beat American Yared Nuguse to second for silver in 3:52.33, while Luxembourg’s Ruben Querinjean completed the podium with bronze at 3:52.77 as national record.
Eritrean Dawit Seare produced a superb late to beat Jakob Ingebrigtsen to claim the men’s 5km title.
He crossed the line with a national record of 12:56 followed by Ingebrigtsen for silver in 12:59 and Saymon Amanuel completed the podium in 13:00.
