Jepkorir win as Mashele edge Mokoka for Nelson Mandela half marathon title

Kenya’s Brillian Jepkorir won the Nelson Mandela Half marathon title held on Saturday in South Africa.

As hosts led by Precious Mashele and Stephen Mokoka dominated the men’s race.

The former Discovery Kenya cross country champion edged out Ethiopia’s Sisay Alemaddis to win the race as she prepares for Olympic Games.

The Boston half marathon champion won the race in 1:07:32 ahead of Alemaddis who crossed the finish line in 1:08:04.

She said the race was good despite preparing in harsh conditions of COVID-19, which was her first race after finishing in 9th (1:06.56) position at the World Half marathon championships held in Gdynia, Poland.

In men, it was an all South Africans as Mashele edged out defending champion Mokoka for the title.

Mashele completed the race in 61:17 with Mokoka’s 61:17 and Mbuleli Mathanga settled for bronze medal after clocking the same time.
