Kenya 4x400m mixed relay make it to World Athletics championships

The 4x400m mixed relay team has qualified to compete at the 2027 World Athletics Championships.

This came following their second finish at the ongoing World Relays Championships in Gaborone, Botswana today.

In the race, the fell to Great Britain with George Mutinda, Mercy Oketch, then Kelvin Tonui and Mercy Chebet who could not maintain Kenya’s lead as Great Britain’s Yemi Jones closed in on the homestretch before overtaking her to claim the win.

With second finish they earned the slot for the World Championships in 3:09.87.

In the 4x100m Mixed Relay team, the quartet Moses Onyango, Millicent Ndoro, Dennis Mwai and Oketch failed to make to the final after fourth-place finish in Heat 3 when they clocked 41.35.

Ferdinand Omanyala led 4x100m will have a second shot final qualifying round on Sunday when they will need to finish in the top two to seal a place at the 2025 Worlds

Omanyala led Mark Otieno, Ronald Koech and then Meshack Babu ran their season best of 38.50 seconds to finish 5th.

Kenya had no luck in the last events of the day as they finished last in the women’s 4x400m relay, clocking 3:35.90, despite Mercy Oketch winning the first leg. The story was the same for Kenya’s men’s 4x400m relay team as they also finished last. The two sides will hope to make amends in the second qualifying round on Sunday
