Kenya Harlequins emerged victorious beating rivals KCB Rugby to win the 35th edition of Driftwood 7s title, the Kenya Rugby Union Rugby 7s circuit at the Mombasa Sports Club today.
Quins were 15-12 winners against the bankers in a hotly contested final, the second final win against the bankers after Kakamega Ingo 7s win last month.
Last year’s winners, Kabras Rugby Club settled for third place after beating KU Blak Blad 7-5.
With the victory, Harlequins have taken the lead on 97 points ahead of the final round at the Prinsloo 7s next weekend.
Kabras, who have won two meetings are second on 88 points while KCB is third on 86 points.
Quins have since managed to reach at least the semi-finals of every leg this season and have won two, the other being Ingo 7s in Kakamega. Captain, Richel Wangila expressed confidence in winning the Princeloo 7s, and overall title of the SportPesa 7s circuit.
“This is our second win and we are not about to slow down on our onslaught against our opponents. We are dead set to win Princeloo 7s and look forward to an energetic game just like we have displayed here today”, said Wangila.
KCB Rugby put up a commendable performance, drawing first blood early on in the game, showcasing the high level of competition in this year’s edition with a well converted try and another unconverted one putting them in full control at 12-0. Quins would however equalize with two tries as fans cheered on, to set up an intriguing final.
NYS 7s emerged the winners in the Division two that had bigger teams from the 16 and 20 teams in divisions one and two respectively.
Blak Blad beat Kabras RFC 22-10 for the third position
