Kipngeno and kiriago win gold and silver at World Mountain

Patrick Kipng’eno and Philemon Kiriago won gold and silver for Kenya at the World Mountain and Trail Running Championships held today in Chang Mai, Thailand.

The duo, who registered similar positions at the Valsir Mountain Running World Cup were in their own class for victory in a championship where Kenya had only three representatives.

Kipng’eno won the 8.5km title in 46:51 ahead of compatriot Kiriago in 48:24 while Spaniard Alejandro Garcia Carrillo was third timing 49:03.

In women, double Valsir Mountain Running World Cup champion Joyce Njeru was in position 35 in a race won by American Allie McLaughlin after timing 55:15, followed by Australia’s Andrea Mayr who timed 55:41 and Maude Mathys from Switzerland completing the podium in 56:00.
