Kiprop names on the pick of Mt Elgon

Reigning All Africa Games 1,500 champion Qualine Kiprop and Chebara Dam Cross Country winner Kenneth Kiprop were the winners of the 4th leg of Athletics Kenya Cross country championships held at Kapsokwony High school ground in Bungoma county today.

It was also good day for Charles Kakuri, who finished second last year to win the junior men  8km while as Winnie Kimutai was the champion in 6k junior cadre.

Kiprop, who has dominated local races sped out of the leading park at 2km, maintained the gap  to win the title in 36:28.2. The Torongo based runner under Barnabas Kitilit, Kiprop said her focus will be to represent the country at the Africa Cross country as well as Olympic Games in her favourite race of 1,500.

“A closing the season and I want to prepare psychologically for the two events hoping to come home with a medal  in each of the championships,” said Kiprop.

Despite complaining of tough and hilly course, Kiprop managed to defeat Josephine Jelagat and Jackline Adudonyang to second and third positions in 36:57.34 and 37:00.00 respectively.

In men’s 10km, Kiprop, who has registered his second win in his career, said the championships was a blessing after changing his training base from Endebes to Sabaot area.

“My journey to this win has not been easy. I have struggled a lot to be where I am with athletics,” said the 23 year old.

He cross the finish line in31:26 ahead of Simon Letaya in second place 31:31 with Kennedy Kipyego completing the podium in 31:38.

In junior races, Kakuri improved from last year’s second position to claim the 8km junior men’s title ahead of Samuel Kibet and Felix Kibet while Kimutai was the 6km champion.

The Chewoyet based Kakuri said he is training for both Olympic games as well as Africa Cross country.

  “I want to major in 10,000, which am good at and make sure I secure good results in future as I represent my country,” said Kakuri.

Kimutai from Kapsait training camp under coach Erick Kimaiyo, retained her junior title in 21:36 ahead of Beatrice Cheburet and Irene Chepkorir.

“My target is to run for this country at the Africa Cross country for the first time,” said the for Two student at Kapsait Secondary school.
