Kiprop seals Vienna marathon hat-trick

Nancy Kiprop used one stone to kill four birds in today’s Vienna City marathon held in Austria.

As Vincent Kipchumba wins men’s race timing 2:06.56 leading two podium positions for Kenyans.

The Elgeyo Marakwet based runner first won the race, leading an all Kenyan podium sweep. Secondly sealing a hat-trick, thirdly smashing the course record and last managed to get her personal best in her 42km distance career.

The reigning Paris half marathon champion defended her title she won last year, adding on her 2017 win for a record win.

She won the race with a course record a course record of 2:22.12 smashing the 19 year old record of 2:23.47 set by Maura Viceconte in 2000.

Apart from defending her title for the second time, she also got her personal best in the race (2:22.12) from 2:22.46 she set during 2018 Frankfurt marathon where she was the best Kenyan in position 6th.

She said it was a dream come true, achieving what many have failed to achieve.

“It was really amazing…. I felt so strong throughout the race but was destroyed the last mile. Now I hit the target, winning 3 consecutive years which is a historical achievement in my life time and career wise,” said Kiprop.

In breaking the course record, the two time Valencia half marathon silver medalist said: “Breaking the course record by far at the same time was not easy at all. The record has been there for long. I really thank God for such great achievement.”

She defeated Angel Tanui (2:25.37) in second place as Maurine Chepkemoi completed the podium sweep for Kenya timing 2:26.16.

It was the similar sweep in men’s category when Kipchumba led Switzerland’s Tadese Abraham to second in 2:07.24 followed by Ugandan Solomon Mutai (2:08.25) for medal bracket.
