IAAF worlds: Kipyegon Bett all set for world final as pals fails

Former World Youth 800m champion Kipyegon Bett will be the only athlete to fly Kenyan flag at this year’s IAAF World Championships in London, Great Britain.

In absence of reigning champion David Rudisha, the 19-year-old Bett automatically qualified to compete in the final race when he won in his heat as Diamond League winner Ferguson Rotich and Emmanuel Korir all failed to qualify in their heats.

Bett crossed the finish line first clocking 1:45.05 to beat Ethiopian Mohammed Amani (1:45.40) and French international Pierre-Ambroise Bosse (1:45.63).

The third heat was the fastest with four athletes making it to the final compared to the first and second heats where Rotich and Korir failed to qualify.

Rotich finished third in 1:46.49 behind Poland’s Adam Kszczot (1:46.24) and Botswana’s Nije Amos in 1:46.29 as Korir came to a distant fourth clocking 1:46.08 in heat two that was won by Canadian international Brandon Mcbride (1:45.43) and Kyle Langford of Great Britain in 1:45.81.
