Korir set focus on World Indoor championships

Reigning World Relay 2x2x400m team silver medalist Naomi Korir has set her focus to claim her major title at the World Indoor Championships in Belgrade, Serbia.

With her focus to compete at the world championships in Oregon, USA, the 800m specialist will be competing at the indoor championships that will be held between 18th to 20th March.

Korir, who won silver alongside Olympic 800m silver medalist Ferguson Rotich in 2x2x400m mixed relays behind hosts Poland with the pair of Joanna Jozwik and Patryk Dobek said it will be her second time competing at the Indoor championships with a ray of hope.

“This gives me gratitude to the federation for believing in her and giving her another opportunity to represent the country after making my international debut at the All Africa Games in 2019, competing in 800m. my preparations to compete in Serbia are high, ready to capture a good position at the indoors meeting in 800m,” said Korir.

She said that the indoor championships will be a precursor for the Africa senior championships that have been lined up this year.

“This is my second time to compete indoors, hoping to register a good time ahead of outdoor Games championships like Africa senior championships as well as World championships,” said Korir.

Coached by Henry Lebo, the runner said she was inspired by former world 800m champion Eunice Sum, who was the captain for the team Kenya at the Olympic Games in Tokyo, japan.

“When it comes to young athletes like me, I have a good chance and I believe that if I prepare well, I will get a chance to compete for Kenya at the championships since I have competed in Athletics Kenya meetings,” she said.

Korir first made the Kenya team at the All Africa Games in 2019 but failed to reach the finals in the 800m but that did not deter her efforts.

“I competed at the national trials ahead of the World championships in Doha in 2019 but I finished in position five hence missing a slot but I ran my personal best of 2:02,” added Korir.
