AFC leopards defeated Nzoia Sugar in post match penalties to claim the inaugural Elijah Lidonde soccer tournament title played at the Bukhungu stadium in Kakamega County.
The 13 time Kenya Premier League Champions Leopards converted eight spot kicks to defeat Nzoia who managed to convert seven following a barren draw in normal time.
Last kick by goalkeeper Benson Mangala earned Leopards the title after hitting the post in the eleven penalties shootouts.
Leopards assistant coach Lawrence Webo said that they played in one of the hard finals but their intentions are meant to win.
“It was difficult but we had no other choice but to win. We had many chances in the open play but we missed many scoring chances but we had to recover and win at the penalties,” said Webo.
Nzoia head coach Salim Babu said that the loss was not good for them now that they have to prepare for next season.
“It was a hard game. We came into this tournament to win but the best team won. We missed a number of chances that if we had utilized well, we could be the champions,” said Babu.
