Michael Kibet, a man to watch at Nyayo in 5,000m

Michael Kibet will be chasing to finish in podium position during the third leg of Athletics Kenya track and Field meeting set for today and tomorrow at the Nyayo National stadium.

The two day, which were moved from Embu to Nyayo due to poor facilities in the Eastern Region, will be crucial for Kibet as he seeks to run for Kenya at both World Athletics Championships as well as the Commonwealth Games this year.

Speaking in Eldoret during the anti-doping seminar, Kibet was vocal that he has not had good results recently and will be hoping to run well come Friday in the congested 5,000m.

“I am aiming to be on the podium at the meet and that will propel me to the top class runner ahead of World championships and Commonwealth Games in the USA and Birmingham,” he said.

The National Police Service graduate failed to compete for the country at the 2019 World Championships in Doha, Qatar due to the anti-doping rules, and said this will be his year of progress now that he has had good times.

The North Rift runner will be making his maiden appearance for the weekend meet this Friday and Saturday.

“I want to run, trying to know if my body is in top shape. But I believe my body is not in bad condition. Am a specialist in cross country and 5,000m races. That is my area of specialty,” said Kibet as he left for Nairobi on Thursday evening ahead of Friday and Saturday championships in one of the championships set to attract top athletes.

After finishing 8th overall at the Agnes Tirop World Cross country tour last month, he will be making his first event after competing on the surface that was full of mud, man-made hills among other obstacles.

“That cross country helped me a lot in gaining experience and testing myself if I am ready to compete against the world and I realized that I have the potential for the challenge,” added Kibet who was 6th  at the national trials held at the lobo village in Eldoret.
