MMUST, Daystar, KU, UOE and Strathmore share titles as KUSF ends

Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) and hosts Kenyatta University (KU) and Strathmore University shared titles at the Kenya University Sports Federation (KUSF) National play-offs that came to an end today at the Kenyatta University grounds.

Coming into the championships as the overall champions MMUST managed to win three titles. They started by defending volleyball titles for both men and women and hockey women.

Women won the title after edging out Chuka University 3-1 in a hotly contested final.

Under the tutelage of Kevin Mulinya, MMUST women held on to defend the title, with the coach attributing the dominance to the school administration.

“We have a good management that is proactive, making it easy for us to train and play well at all costs,” said Mulinya.

It was an easy win for their men, who easily beat the hosts in straight sets of 25-18, 28-26 and 25-13 to retain the title won last year at their backyard.

Apart from the volleyball titles, the women won hockey title with a 2-1 win over KU. In a dramatic show, the champions had been eliminated from the championships in the quarterfinals by Strathmore but the later was disqualified after fielding ineligible player on Saturday evening.

On Sunday morning, MMUST were ambushed to play in the semifinal unprepared and managed to beat University of Nairobi 1-0 to seal the final slot.

At the final, two goals from Clair Mmosi and Sandra Jepkorir were on target to take home the title.

In what was expected, KU women managed to win two titles in netball and football.

In football men final, KU and Masai Mara was abandoned during penalty shootouts after fans invaded the field, causing the game abandoned.

The two teams had played to a barren draw in normal time.

Daystar University won both handball men and women after beating KU at the finals.

In men, they won 14-13 against KU as women were 25-24 winners against the hosts.
