Nderitu Gitonga back on top after Kisii Scrabble tourney

Nderitu Gitonga won the second leg of Scrabble Kenya (S.K), Kisii Grand Prix over the weekend held at Ufanisi Resort.

The two day of action was good for Nderitu as S.K is using the Grand Prix tournaments across the country to select team Kenya to the World English-language Scrabble Players Association Championship (WESPAC) next year in India.

With 82 players taking part, Nderitu has set focus to the world WESPAC championships that will take place between 20th to 26th October 2019.

Gitonga said the tournament was one of the most competitive one since it is a national event.

“Being a national event and a Grand Prix, each player did his or her best in a very well organised tournament. Everybody produced superlative performance and am lucky to emerge the winner,” said Gitonga.

Going into the final round, Standard Chartered Bank top seed Martins Mutahi held a one-game lead but fell to 2nd Seed Nderitu 438-399 to tie on 14 wins. Gitonga pepped Mutahi to the title on the superior spread.

Bernard Koyyoko fresh from winning the Mombasa leg finished a credible 3rd a point back. Meru’s Patrick Miriti and Nyeri’s Charles Kariuki closed the top 5.

It was fan time as David Kimani registered the world with highest points during the tournament, collecting 176 points from SOCKETED word.

In the open division, Homabay county dominated the field with top seed Robert Ang’ila earning promotion to the premier division on a 17-1 record.  Teammate Joash  Njoga Was 2nd 4 points back with John Sang closing the podium

16 players made the debut with homeboy Kennedy Magutu bringing his rack home 10th to emerge as the best debutant.
