Nelson Oyoo hands Nakuru Driftwood sevens title

Nelson Oyoo’s sudden death try sealed the victory for Nakuru RFC at the Driftwood sevens, the fourth leg of National Sevens Rugby Circuit at Mombasa Sports Club today.

It was the bad day for three series leaders Homeboyz who failed to clinch their fourth successful titles and defending their title after winning in the Prinsloo opener in Nakuru, Sepetuka in Eldoret and Kabeberi sevens in Machakos.

The Nakuru based team trounced two time finalists Mwamba RFC with the former making the first try when Donald Oluoch converted his try for 7-0 up at halftime lead.

Named Kulabu, Mwamba came to the second half stronger fighting Wanyore (Nakuru) with Collins Injera braking the backline for a try that were converted by Daniel Tabu taking the game into sudden death.

Defending champions Homeboyz, suffered a shock 36-21 defeat at the hands of Mwamba at the semifinals stage.

Homeboyz, who are series leaders after winning the Kabeberi, Prinsloo and the Sepetuka Sevens, had their dreams for a fourth cut short despite a brilliant start at this event

Collins Injera and Geofrey Ochieng with two tries each, Martin Wanjia and Daniel Tabu with a try each was all Mwamba needed for the sweet win setting a final date with Nakuru.

Tabu made three conversions in this game, with Charles Odhiambo, Leonard Odhiambo and Mark Wandeti reply for Homeboyz with a try each.

The other semifinal saw Nakuru narrowly beat KCB 12-10.

In the main cup quarter final matches, Homeboyz beat Resolution Kisii 29-7, Mwamba saw off Kabras Sugar 12-7, Nakuru edged Menengai Oil 26-7, while KCB defeated Nondies 19-10.

Kenya Harlequins won the Challenge Trophy after beating Impala 15-7.

Strathmore University Leos won the 13th place final after beating Makueni County 14-5, while Nondies beat Kabras 22-0 for the 5th place final win.
