Over 2,000 athletes have already registered for the second edition of Eldoret City Marathon set to held tomorrow in Eldoret town where the winners will pocket kshs 3.5 million.
By close of business on Friday, race director Moses Tanui, the 1992 Olympic Games 10,000m silver medalist revealed that a total of 750 and 200 athletes have registered in men’s elite marathon race while over 1,000m athletes have penned for 5km fan race.
“This is the highest number of entrants in the race. We are all ready for race beacuses the preparations are 95% complete ready for the Sunday action,” said the two time Boston marathon winner.
Race chairman Andrew Chelogoi said that being Easter Holiday, the race will inconvenience many people traveling in and out of Eldoret.
“We are urging members of the public to bear with us this Sunday only. We know it is holiday where traveling in and out of Eldoret will be high but the race is all about Kenyans and is nurturing talents from across the country. We are giving an opportunity for athletes to build their future,” said Chelogoi.
Zachaelus Ng’eno, the Deputy County Police Commander was optimistic that the race will be successful basing on the preparations of the event.
“The roads will close at 5:00hours on Sunday. We are urging road users to use alternative routes that will be guided by the police who will be alert in all relevant junctions,” said Ng’eno.
