Pan African Scrabble Association (PANASA) president Adekoyejo Adegbesan proved his skills by winning the Nairobi National Scrabble Championships played at the Strathmore University.
The Nigerian international outwitted Kenyans to scoop the top position in the two day championships that started yesterday May 3rd to Sunday May 4th winning twelve and half games, losing five and half in the 18 game encounter.
He lost the first game to Michael Gongolo in game three, lost the second match to Manase Otieno in game six, former Scrabble Kenya Chairman Bernard Amuke in match 12th, before the duo leveling in match 13th and 14th before drawing again with Allan Oyende in game 15th.
Gongolo managed second position with Oyende coming third.
Former Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) player Timothy Hans was delighted to have won the Division C.
He said that playing against Neema was the most tough player.
“Training/preparation for this championships, I have been studying on Ankiroid and lately been playing bot on woogles and reviewing each and every game. Through that, the power of the brain, it can never forget something it has interacted with .I try to find familiarity in every rack I have,” said Hans.
During the championships, he said that he managed to manage the pressure, trying to figure out his best moves.
“Playing this sport, I am always inspired by Mack Meller by watching how he plays then back Kenya, I follow Richard Okechi because of his dedication to help as many students to be better,” he added.
He added that dedicating quality time to learning and reviewing games matters al lot and that will improve the game.
“I have taken the sport seriously. It is a good memory jogger and test your ability to recall now that scrabble at university is getting better, they need to be supported a lot in terms of materials for reading and also waivers for them to participate in our tournaments,” he said.
