Focused to win a medal at the Confederation of Africa Athletics (CAA) under 18 championships in Lusaka, Zambia, Selfa Ajiambo started her journey in earnest with victory during the conclusion of National Kenya Primary Schools Sports Association (KPSSA) track and field at the William Ole Ntimama stadium in Narok.
Ajiambo, who left the Lusaka training camp to compete at the event, won the 100m title to set the ball rolling.
Representing Western Region from Nangina primary school in Busia County, Ajiambo won the title in 12.78 ahead of Mary Sofia from Rift valley’s All Saints in 12.94 and compatriot Jacklyn Tianina in 13.25.
She said that the win was good now that she will be running for the country in Lusaka.
“I came to try my best here and I thank God that I have managed to carry the day. This is part of my preparations for Africa championships,” said Ajiambo.
The athlete who anchored team Kenya to win 4x100m relay at the east Africa under 18 championships was selected alongside east Africa 100m champion Jackline Nguyo and Sharon Moraa to compete in 100m.
As Ajiambo shone in girls, Samuel Chege from Narok won the boys title in `11.09 ahead of Nyanza’s Albert Digo (11.96) and compatriot Brian Ochieng (12.12).
Emmanuel Kiprono from Rift valley was victorious in boys 5,000m after timing 15:17.55 ahead of team mate Emmanuel Kipkurui (15:50.31) and Isaac Kibet from Western (16:28.78) to complete the podium.
In sprints, Vicody Chemutai, who failed to make Lusaka team won the 400m title. Representing narok primary, the Rift valley runner won the title after timing 60.18 followed closely by team mate Ruth Chematia (60.51) and Mary kwamboka coming third in 62.19.
In the 400m hurdles, Collins Kipkurui from Kurgut School in Rift Valley was victorious after clocking 59.53 beating his running mate Edwin Kiplagat from Kipsingo primary to second in 60.13 and Nyanza’s Nyansana School Martin Ongono coming third at 60.65.
Nyanza’s Dennis Otieno of Rabwa school won the boys 5,000m walk 22:55.92 ahead of Western’s Adanya primary Meshack Micah Opili (22;56.15) and Nicholas lushike in third at 22:59.63.
