Sigona’s long wait ends as they win Tannahill Shield title at Royal

Sigona golf club are the new champions of this year’s Tannahill Shield golf tournament played at the par 72 Royal Nairobi golf course.

Sigona Golf club are the champions of 2023 Tannahill Shield golf championships that came to an end on Sunday afternoon after 49 years on long wait.

The Nairobi based club managed to gather 47 points to claim the title, the last time they had one was in 1974 when they tied with Vet lab to then champions Muthaiga who finished fourth overall with 36 points

Playing 32 matches in the three days that teed off on Friday, Sigona won 22, losing 7 and drawing 3 for the title ahead of Mombasa Club who managed 40 points from similar matches, winning 18, losing 10 and drawing 4 while Western team, despite leading day one accumulated 36 points from similar matches, by winning 26, losing 12 and drawing 4.

During the final round on Sunday, the champions defeated karen country club 5-3 collecting al, 8 points where the pair of Akshay Chandaria and Suny Matharu defeated the pair of Justus Njogu and Rufus Gichuki 9-8 before Sam King’ori and ngondo Kimemia shared points with Liban Roba and Shahshwat Harish.

In other encounters, Deep Shah and Kush Mediratta were 4-3 winners against Gilber Maina and Paul Kiguamba.

Western team managed by Eldoret Club’s Aron improved one position, from 4th last year to 3rd this year.

In the second round on Saturday, Sigona took charge from Western after beating Mombasa 8-0 and Railway 7-1 to collect 15 points in the morning’s before tying with Western on 23 points.

On Friday, Western took the lead with a big margin as they set the pace for the champions to be, Sigona.

The combined team put up a brave fight after beating Windsor 8-0, then beat Kenya Railway Golf Club 6-2 for a total of 14 points, to finish ahead of Mombasa.

The Nakuru pair of John Kamais and Luther Kamau were 3-2 winners over Kenya Railways’ pair of John Lejirmah and Fidelis Kimanzi.

Nandi Bear’s Nelson Koech and Kitale’s Philip Shiarsy played half against Edwin Murungi and Edward Manywanda before the Eldoret pair of Ken Serem and Joseph Watunu won 5-4 beat the pair of Kenya Railways Joseph Gathumbi and John Kaimenyi.

The round one leaders’s of Elly Barno (Nandi Bears) and Geoffrey Karioki (Kericho) beat Railway’s pair of Anthony Muhoro and Willy Motori.

Despite Muthaiga failing to retain their title, the club members managed to win seniors and junior title played on Thursday and Wednesday at the same venue.

In the senior category, the champions defeated Kenya Railway with a narrow win of 265-257 with the Wachira Mahihu and Kumar Dhall posting 84 gross as Selest Kilinda and Martin Mwangi, Evans Vitisia and Kamau Thugge posted 86 gross for a total for a total of 256 gross

While Railway’s Mburu Muigai and Nguru Wachira managed 79 gross as Adelbert Omooria and Joe Kehara carded 92 and R.N. Njoroge and Tim Ruhiu posted 86 for 257.

In the juniors, Muthaiga team stunned Karen with a big margin of 11 shots 539 against 550.
