Someki and Chepchumba shine at primary athletics in Narok

Sandra Chepchumba and Emmanuel Someki were the winners in their events as Kenya Primary Schools Sports Association (KPSSSA) track and field got underway on Monday morning at the William Ole Ntimama stadium in Narok County.

Chepchumba from Kapchelangoi primary school in Nandi County and  Someki of Dr Masidet won the 2,000m steeplechase and 3,000m titles in the first races of the day.

Representing Rift Valley region, won the water and barriers title in 6:56.03 ahead of compatriot Rehema Chepkurui from Kalot primary to second position after timing 7:11.93 and Western’s Vanessa Chebet from Kaboriot Primary completing the podium in 7:40.81.

“The win came in due to my great training by my teachers and coach for this title. I want to run to the top level,” said the 14 year old runner.

Someki from Rift Valley, who battled to victory against compatriot Dominic Kiplimo and Western’s Mathew Kibet won the title in 8:25.

Kiplimo from Maromu was second in 8:34 before Kostoi’s Kibet completed the podium in 9:00.

KPSSSA chairman Ben Achieng said that they are set to partner with Athletics Kenya to promote junior athletes’ careers across the country.

Speaking during the school championships in Narok, Achieng said that they want to have clear records of these junior athletes so that when Athletics Kenya needs to send junior athletes to various championships, they will be able to provide.

“We are going to have clear time records, and hand them to the federation as part of talent recognition. We shall capture all their records and that will help the federation to easily monitor the athletes at a young stage,” added Achieng.

With hosts on their road to defend their national title, Achieng believes that with many changes being witnessed, they may fall short and hand the title to other regions.

“With the eight regions facing off, change may arise and as the hosts they have a higher chance but the competitive nature of these athletes, anybody can win at any time,” said Achieng.
