Kabarak University student Zadock Tanui swung into victory at the June Monthly Mug played on par 72 Nandi Bears Golf club on Sunday.
The second year education student opened the course 65 nett for the title with 89 gross on his home club in the first tournament following sports resumption as announced by President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Playing handicap 24, Tanui said the tournament was good for him since it was the best day on the course.
“The day becamse great for me on the course and being my home club, I had to play well after good-long week training,” said Tanui who is on long holiday.
In the first nine, he dropped a point each in the first, second and third but recovered with a par in 4th before he bogeyed in 5th and 6th. He dropped two in the 7th and 9th with a bogey in between for two under, 34 gross.
In a tournament that attracted 40 golfers, Tanui entered the second nine with back to back bogeys in 10th, 11th and 12th. Went up with a par in the 13th before dropping one in 14th and 15th, recovered with a par in 16th and managed back to back bogeyes in the 17th and 18th for the final round of -5 31 gross.
Handicap 5 golfer Sosten Biwott was second with 69 nett leading Lady Captain Goreti Mutai, handicap 36 on Count-back.
Aileen Chepchumba was the lady winner on 75 nett with Wilson Chepkwony and club chairman, who also served as captain Kenduiwo Mutai taking home first and second nine prizes on 34 and 33 nett respectively.
Mutai said as the first tournament on the course, it was an achievement with great turn-out.
“Having such tournaments are good for golfers across the board. I must say that the tournament was good as the first tournament. We want as a club to continue with such tournaments,” said Mutai.
