Tirop, Kasait and Obiri through to 5,000m final at Tokyo Olympic Games

Former world Youth Lilian Kasait Rengeruk, former world cross country champion Agnes Jebet Tiro and world 5,000m champion Hellen Onsando Obiri qualified to compete at the 5,000m final following their dominance in their heats today.

Kasait, the former World Junior 3,000m silver medalist, competing in heat one alongside two time world 10,000m bronze medalist Tirop were the first ones to qualify in heat one.

The former word cross country silver medalist Tirop finished second in the heat after timing 14:4801 behind the winner Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands who clocked 14:47.89 with Ethiopian Senbere Teferi completing the podium in 14:48.31 followed by compatriot Elgayehu Taye in 4th with 14:48.52 before Kasait coming in 5th position as the last qualifier in 14:50.36.

The world cross country champion Obiri qualified in heat 2 when she clocked 14:55.77 to emerge position two behind the winner Guday Tsegay from Ethiopia who timed 14:55.74 as Italy’s Nadia Battocletti completed the podium in 14:55.83.

USA’s Elise Ganny and Norway’s Karoline Bjerkelli Grovdal were in 4th and 5th positions respectily after clocking 14:56.14 and 14:56.82.

However Namibia’s Francine Niyonsaba was disqualified despite her qualifying into the finals.
