Kenyan boxers continued to suffer at the ongoing 12th edition of IBA Women’s World Championships in Turkey.
On Wednesday night a minimum of six boxers had been b beaten out of the championships: these includes the light-middleweight Lorna Kusa, minimum weight Christine Ongare, flyweight Ann Wanjiru, featherweight Beatrice Akoth, middleweight Elizabeth Akinyi and light-welter Teresia Wanjiru.
The remaining four in this highly competitive tournament are bantamweight Amina Martha, lightweight Stacy Ayoma, welter Everlyn Akinyi and light-heavyweight Liz Andiego.
This is the third time Andiego is taking part in the Women’s World Championships, the first time being in 2010 in Barbados and then in 2012 in China.
Martha and Ayoma will be in action today (May 12) with Akinyi fighting in the round of 16 on Sunday and Andiego in the quarter-finals on Monday.
Footballer-turned boxer Akinyi, who received a bye to the last 16, meets the winner of today’s bout between Morocco’s Oumayma Bel Abib vs Ivanusa Gomes of Cape Verde while Andiego, a beneficiary of a bye to the quarters, will take on the winner of Friday’s (May 13) bout between Turkey’s Elif Guneri and South Africa’s Mkateko Guneri.
Other African boxers who received byes to the quarters are heavyweights Morocco’s 2019 World Championships bronze medallist Khadija Mardi and DRC’s Lisa Kanjinga who fights Uzbekistan’s Mokhira Abdullaeva with Mardi taking on India’s Nandini on May 16.
