Team Blitzkrieg- Mbugua, Oyende and Umebiye- crowned PANASA president’s cup champions

Team Blitzkrieg made up of Nicholas Mbugua from Kenya, Allan Oyende (Kenya) and Nigerian Cyril Umebiye were crowned the champions of the second edition of PANASA President’s Cup that came to an end yesterday at Trademark Hotel, Nairobi.

The two day event brought together 30 players, consisting of six teams faced off in a crucial championships as part of players’ preparations for the World English Scrabble Players Association Championships (WESPAC) that will be held in Accra, Ghana in October.

Under captain Umebiye, the team managed to secure victory as they pocketed 5,000 US Dollars plus a trophy.

Grandmaster Oyende said that the championships were great for the players who made it to the world event.

“The championships were great for us because each one of us made it to the WESPAC with a token of appreciation,” said Oyende.

The championships attracted six nations with Mbugua with 11 points in the finals, anchoring his country mate Oyende with 8 wins and Cyril 5.5 to clinch 9 match points ahead of the all Nigerian trio LSC Drones who finished on 8 match points.

Wonderkinds, 2 Nigerians and 1 Ugandan Edged Scorpions 2 Kenyans and 1 Ugandan to 3rd on 8 match points.

The winners earned return tickets to the world championship in Ghana later in the year
