Alfred Nandwa turns pro,focus on Kenya Open title

Alfred Nandwa is rated as one of the most successful amateur golfers in the country following his performance both at national and international competitions.

Railway club member, who turned professional golfer late last year, has his plans to end the jinx of Kenyan professional golfers who have failed to win any Barclays Kenya Open golf, with his ambitions to win the 2018 edition that marks 50 years in an event that tees off today on hard par 71 Muthaiga golf club.

“This will be my great time to showcase another talent as a professional golfer,” said Nandwa.

The Nakuru born golfer discovered his golf prodigy at Njoro country club at a tender age of 10 years by the local pros playing in the club. He has since risen through the ranks from a junior golf to the captain of the national team and now a professional golfer.

His breakthrough is when he finished third during 2010’s prestigious coronation trophy played at Nakuru golf club, therefore attracting a host of clubs both locally and across borders seeking for his signature into their clubs. He has been consistently topped the amateur rankings in the country. Pundits have tipped him for a bigger success in the coming years due to the huge potential and skill at bay.

Nandwa has represented both his club and the country in various tournaments. At the club, he has played Nairobi District League Matches, Nairobi District Foursomes and Tannahill Shield among others.

Before turning pro on Noember 2nd, Nandwa was Kenya Amature Golf Championships (KAGC) captain leading Kenyan team made up of Edwin Mudanyi (Vet Lab), Mike Kisia (Vet Lab), Agil is Hag, Mutahi Kibugu (Muthaiga), John Karichu (Limuru) among others.

While captaining the national team, he led Kenya team win the Victoria Cup in Uganda (2017), Africa Zone Five (Zambia (2017), All Africa Golf Tournament where he finished 8th overall in Zimbabwe (2017), East African Challenge winner, Tanzanian (2017), runners up 2016 in Ethiopia and 2014 in Uganda.

Apart from team titles, he also played for Kenya Africa Zone chmpionships, Africa Amateur Strokeplay championships in South Africa among others.

“With my credible skills in all international championships, I was named the most valuable player at the 2017 East and Central Africa during the East African Challenge Cup in Daresalaam, Tanzania,” said Nandwa.

locally Nadwa won the 2015 Mount Kenya Championships, 2016 Kenya Amateur Strokeplay championships (Thika), 2016 Railway Invitation and 2017 Muthaiga Open but did not defend his title after turning pro.

Managed by Geoffrey Kiprop and coached national coach John Van Leafland, the 30 year old golfer has played at Rwanda Open, Uganda Open and twice at Kenya Open as an amateur.

Apart from being the Kenyan captain, he also served as Njoro vice captain from 2012-2014 later became a full captain of the club in 2015.
