This year’s Safari Sevens will be held at the Rugby Football Union of East Africa (RFUEA) grounds from November 4-5, Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) confirmed Friday.
The event returns to RFUEA for the first time since 2010. The event was moved to the Nyayo National Stadium for the 2011 and 2012 championships before being relocated to the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.
KRU chairman Richard Omwela said they have been forced to relocate to Ngong Road since the venues at Kasarani and Nyayo will be closed for renovations ahead of the African Nations Championships (Chan).
At the same time, United States of America is the first team to confirm participation at the Safari Sevens.
USA is handled by former Kenya Sevens coach Mike Friday.
The USA Sevens confirms participation only a month after the country withdrew its team for the World Under-18 Championships planned for July 12-16 at Kasarani owing to security fears.
Omwela said the move to have this year’s event in November is in view of attracting more teams that are bound for the World Sevens Series that start in December in Dubai.
Omwela said they will now embark on extensive renovations at the RFUEA grounds with the help of one of their sponsors SportPesa.
