Fresh from winning Chicago Marathon, former world half marathon champion Brigid Kosgei and Kelvin Kiptum were the winners of Kakamega half marathon titles ran today in Kakamega County.
As Justus Kimutai and Lilian Matelong claimed the 42km road race in the event set to reclaim natural Kakamega Forest.
Kosgei, who won the 2017 Honolulu Marathon with a course record, won the race timing 72:30 followed by Nakuru’s Joyce Chepkemoi in 73:40 and Gladys Kipsoi completing the podium places clocking 77:56.
The 2018 London marathon silver medalist said she was using the event as part of her preparations for the 2019 season.
“I came here to test my speed as part of 2019 preparations for major races across the world,” said the 2017 Chicago marathon silver medalist.
In men’s 21km, Kelvin Kiptum claimed the title timing 64:41 ahead of Bernard Kibet (64:54) and Daniel Kiprotich’s 65:02.
Lilian Matelong and Justus Kimutai clocked 2:43.15 and 2:18.06 to claim the women and men’s 42km titles respectively.
Kericho based Matelong beat Uasin Gishu’s Faith Cheruto to second timing 2:46.53 and Nandi’s Leah Cherotich came third in 2:45.25.
Kimutai from Elgeyo Marakwet trounced countymate Mathew Kemboi to second in 2:21.44 as West Pokot’s Hosea Mwok completed the podium in 2:22.26.
