Bungoma Jogoo captain Majak Deng was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) after inspiring his side to victory over Kimilili Sonics in the final of the inaugural Bungoma Basketball League, played at the Bungoma High School court yesterday.
Deng was in superb form, converting 24 of Jogoo’s 46 points, as his team triumphed 46–30 in a thrilling final. The hosts dominated proceedings, winning three of the four quarters with scores of 15–10, 8–9, 10–8, and 13–3 to seal the historic win.
The maiden county league featured eight teams, split into two conferences — Kimilili and Bungoma.
Kimilili Conference had Friends School Kamusinga, Kimilili Sonics, Chetambe, and Cheptais Hunters while Bungoma Conference composed of Bungoma Jogoo, Malaba Hawks, Kisiwa Rockets, and Bungoma Polytechnic.
According to Secretary General Isaac Sali, the finalists — Sonics and Jogoo — qualified after winning their respective conference championships. In the third-place playoff, Malaba Hawks defeated Friends School Kamusinga.
“The final was well played with great passion. The best team won. Our goal is to promote basketball in Bungoma and eventually affiliate with the Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF),” said Sali. “We want to see local teams reach higher levels, including the Premier League.”
MVP Deng hailed the tournament’s success, saying it marked a new dawn for basketball in the region.
“This victory means a lot — not just to us as a team, but to young basketball lovers in the county. These leagues help nurture local talent and allow players to experience real competition rather than just watching online,” said Deng.
He emphasized that sports play a vital role in uniting the youth and keeping them engaged in positive activities.
“Having experienced players like Bush Wamukota, who plays for the national team, come to support and mentor us is inspiring. With such initiatives, I believe Bungoma will soon produce teams capable of competing nationally under the KBF,” he added.
The successful conclusion of the Bungoma Basketball League marks a major step in growing the sport within the region, with organizers optimistic about expanding future editions.
