Elizabeth Jepchirchir rewarded for supporting athletes in Iten

Elizabeth Jepchirchir, who was spotted enthusiastically cheering for Iten marathon winner Luka Kiprop, has declared herself Kenya’s top supporter for the upcoming Paris Olympic Games.

This enthusiasm follows her recognition by the Sports Association of Kenya (SJAK) in collaboration with LG TV, where she was presented with a television during a press briefing at Kenrail Towers on Thursday.

Jepchirchir garnered attention from the media during the Elgeyo Marakwet Marathon, where she cheered on the winner, Luka Kiprop.

The mother of nine shared her eagerness to use the TV to extend her unwavering support to Kenyan athletes on the international stage, particularly during the Paris 2024 Olympics.

”I am very honored for this television before I never had a tv to give my support to these athletes but now I am going to be watching and cheering them on especially next year during the Paris 2024 Olympics. I will be the number one supporter of Kenyan athletes on the big stage,” said Jepchirchir.

Reflecting on her lifelong passion for sports, Jepchirchir revealed her athletic background, having been a sprinter at the national level during her youth.

”Since I was young  I had this undying love for sports. I used to run in primary and I am still running in this big age. I didn’t have anything back then only God by my side. I didn’t think education was for me I stopped schooling after class seven,” she said.

”I used to run back then going four rounds in the field everyday. I used to go for relays and walking races back in the day, it made happy. I love watching sports, when my children are playing or running in school I run with them to give them that support. I also want them to be athletes.”

Recalling her experience during the Iten Marathon, she described running alongside Kiprop and encouraging him to victory.

”My heart is for sports will always be. I don’t know where the energy is coming from but i thank God for the will. During Iten i saw Kiprop running and i decided to run with him. I told him this race is yours. He went on to the finish line. I had no idea it was him that. I felt very good and thanked God,” she added.

Apart from being an avid sports enthusiast, Jepchirchir, who is also a pastor, encouraged others to consider athletics as a potential source of income.

”Athletics uplifts many people, and our nation is renowned for running. I advise others to venture into athletics, not only to make the country proud but also to earn a living. Despite my age, I continue to run, and I challenge the younger generation to do the same,” she concluded.
