Another sports personality has joined the growing list of sportsmen and women joining politics across the country come August 8th General elections.
On Friday, former football administrator Elizabeth Shako announced her intention to vie for Langas Ward member of County Assembly (MCA) in Uasin Gishu County.
She is among the various contenders for the post, vying on an independent ticket, the same way 2012 Boston marathon champion Wesley Korir did to capture Cherang’any parliamentary seat in 2013.
After fighting for women leagues in the country and campaigning for girl child inclusivity, Shako will be working on her way to unseat the current MCA Peter Muya.
“I have been trying to support girl child empowerment and if I win the post, it will be better for me since I have been doing this job very well across the country,” said Shako.
As former National organasing secretary of women league in the ministry of Sports tried her luck for the disbanded Kenya Football federation (KFF) now Football Kenya Federation (FKF) chairperson’s post but lost to former chairman Sam Nyamweya.
If she captures the seat, she will be joining former football administrators Alfred Wekesa Sambu, now MP for Webuye East, former Kanduyi legislature Alfred Khang’ati and former Katanga MP Peter Kenneth.
Shako who is now the Director of Solasa Sports, has initiated several projects that cuts across the county which have changed the livelihoods of many.
“I believe I am capable of transforming the lives o many people in the ward through developments. I have demonstrated it hence I am going for the seat,” She said on Friday at Solasa Education centre in Langas.
Kenya’s Solasa which is under Solwodi Germany has been empowering women and girls to be self –reliant in bettering their livelihoods.
The group is fishing girls and women who are engaging in commercial sex work and equipping them with skills that will enable overcome life challenges.
They include hairdressing, handicraft, fashion and design and life skills programme for girls while women have been empowered to start bakeries, soap making and Agri-business activities.
Meanwhile top Solasa teams from across the country will be converging at Wareng High School for a Solasa tournament.
The tournaments consists of four ladies’ teams from Malindi, Mumias, Kisumu and their hosts Eldoret for both juniors and senior category played in a round robin format.
